No such thing as the January Blues!

Happy 2016! It’s here at last, the New Year. Which can mean only one thing, it is time to start setting goals and challenges for the 12 months ahead.

If you are anything like me, you will be excited by the endless possibilities and the ‘new-ness’ of it all. I have always started the New Year with working out which events I am going to enter, including runs, swims, triathlons and cycle sportives. I aim to have a couple of ‘A’ races, normally triathlons and then I fit in other events as part of my training programme.

This year, I have decided to enter some of the running events I have taken part in previously and aim to improve my times. So this year is PB (Personal Best) year! To do this though, I know I need to follow specific training plans for each of the events I enter if I wish to succeed in achieving my goal.

We set goals and aims every day, whether these be for work, at home, in ensuring everything at runs smoothly, the kids get to school, there is bread and milk in the fridge and so on. Some people’s goals or ‘dreams with deadlines’ as I have heard them referred to, are like a casual wish list, whilst others are detailed and well documented.

It is my view, that to achieve any exercise or fitness goal, whether it be weight loss, improved fitness, training for a specific event or occasion, there is the need for a structured plan to follow as to how this will happen, otherwise it is all too easy to lose motivation and lose sight of why we were doing it in the first place.

Making a plan, in which you set specific goals, is the key. Often, the compulsion to act and get into it, overrides the desire to plan, so we never truly identify what we want to achieve nor how to achieve it. The result of this is that we do not get the results we expect and we become disillusioned.

  • a consultation where we will discuss your goals and establish your current levels of exercise and fitness (in doing so, we will set a baseline to monitor progress);
  • a customised 4 week training programme tailored to your goals, time available, other commitments, exercise preferences;
  • ongoing phone and email support for the 4 weeks of the programme;
  • a 30 minute PT session at the end of the 4 weeks to review progress and discuss progression if required.
